The 10th annual Homelessness Marathon is broadcasting live from the streets of Canada on February 22nd - February 23rd! CKDU is hosting a 3 hour live broadcast from the St. Matthew's Church, and we are looking for a coordinator to work with CKDU's Spoken Word Department to ensure an amazing event this year. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:

CKDU IS SEEKING AHOMELESSNESS MARATHON COORDINATOR

voices and artists. Thestation broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run byroughly 150 volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and 5permanent part-time staff.

Nature of the job:

The Homelessness MarathonCoordinator is responsible for overseeing the Homelessness Marathonevent, taking place in Halifax on February 22^nd, from 6 pmuntil February 23^rd, 8 am, in coordination with the CKDUSpoken Word Department, and the national Homelessness Marathoncoordinator in Montreal. This includes regular meetings, taskcompletion and delegation, volunteer coordination, and ensuring anerror-free, smooth flow at the event. Working with various audiotechnologies is a strong asset. Experience with grassrootsinitiatives addressing homelessness is also an asset, includingworking with populations affected by homelessness, poverty, ordiffering abilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In cooperation with CKDU's Spoken WordDepartment, assist in the following:

-Ensure coordination and adequatevolunteer power for the following task areas: remote broadcasting,on-air studio monitoring, sound technician for live musicalperformance and panel discussion, food and beverage preparation andserving, greeting guests at the front door, and all-night shifts.

-Assist MC's in coordinating on-aircontent: panelists from various sectors ( including directly affectedpeople, activists, experts, government, etc), live musical guests,and open mic performances.

-Assist in developing theme for paneldiscussion, focus topics, questions, and how to engage audience.

-Coordinate solicitation of food andgrocery donations from local businesses

-Ensure adequate promotions: postering,on-air promo.

-Maintain excellent communication withlocal service providers, including calls, questionnaires, and visitsto make announcements at local services.

-Find transportation for equipment andfood.

-Clean up the morning after, return allequipment to CKDU / rental location. Tidy kitchen.

-Capture audio from live event, editand post online for distribution to campus/community radio.

Required qualifications:

-volunteer management, team building,or leadership skills.

-experience interacting with peopleaffected by poverty and/or homelessness.

-knowledge and understanding of thecampus/community radio sector, CKDU mandate, and spoken word content.

-knowledge and understanding of issuessurrounding homelessness and poverty.

-ability to multi-task, includingvarious technical tasks, food and accommodating people of variousbackgrounds, and ensuring a smooth, successful event.

-experience in promotion and eventcoordination.

Desired qualifications:

-experience working or volunteering incommunity radio

-experience in radio production, liveremote broadcasting, or internet audio streaming.

Accountability, Hours, andRemuneration:

The Homelessness Marathon Coordinatoris a member of CKDU's non-hierarchical staff structure, the CKDUSpoken Word Department, and is accountable to the CKDU Board ofDirectors.

The Homelessness Marathon Coordinatoris a one-month contract position, with a flat rate of $1,000. Thisworks to 63 hours worked over four weeks, at $15.75 an hour.

Week 1: 8 hours

Week 2: 12 hours

Week 3: 18 hours

Week 4: 25 hours

The dates of the contract run fromJanuary 29^th, to February 25^th. Work will bedone during the weekdays, and some weeknights. The Coordinator willbe responsible for wakeful maintenance of the Marathon from 6 pmuntil 8 am, but is not required to work the entire 14 hours, providedCKDU members can be found to take shifts through the night.

CKDU-FM is a non-profit campus and community radio station based at Dalhousie University serving listeners throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and under-represented voices and artists. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 150 volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and 5 permanent part-time staff.

Nature of the job:
The Station Coordinator is responsible for the financial and administrative operations of the station. This includes developing and administering budgets, overseeing and monitoring fundraising, communicating with the CKDU Board of Directors, the Dalhousie Student Union and external organizations like the CRTC, all the while working within the cooperative, non-hierarchical staff structure, as a part of station committees, and with volunteers on station projects.

Duties & responsibilities:

Attend weekly staff meetings, take part in consensus decision-making and participate in a cooperative staff structure
With other staff members, assist in aspects of Funding Drive as required
Maintain healthy relationship with the volunteers, take part in decision-making in programmers' meetings and programmer-driven committee meetings
Hold a weekly Station Orientation training session
Act as primary liaison to the Dalhousie Student Union, governmental agencies and the community
Act as liaison and administrator for all contract employees
Make sure CKDU meets DSU standards for Societies
Work with Finance Committee and develop, implement and monitor operating and capital budgets
Undertake long-term fiscal planning and maintain financial contracts and documents
Work closely with the Bookkeeper, Dalhousie Student Union Accounting Department, CKDU FM’s bank and accountant on bill payments, cheque requisitions, deposits and all other financial matters
Coordinate relevant employment paperwork for all new and current employees, both permanent and temporary
Participate in Finance Committee and other meetings as required
In consultation with the Programming Committee, Program Director and Spoken Word Coordinator, respond to public comments and complaints about programming
In conjunction with the Programming Committee, Program Director and Spoken Word Coordinator, enforce CKDU rules and, if necessary, discipline errant programmers
Maintain documents required by regulatory and monitoring bodies including SOCAN, the CRTC, Joint Stocks, Industry Canada and other government departments
Coordinate Annual General Meeting in accordance with requirements of Joint Stocks
Solicit and monitor grant applications
Maintain station resources and supplies
Sit on the Board of Directors as a non-voting member
Sit as staff rep on Employment, Finance and Fundraising committees
Keep information, like director lists, policy changes, and constitutional changes, current with Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks, SOCAN and the CRTC
Maintain CKDU’s volunteer database, which includes (but is not limited to) collecting membership fees, updating the membership list, tracking volunteer and training hours for individual programmers, and keeping an updated membership list
Liaise with national advertising sales (Target) and oversee local advertising sales and billing
Organize regular Programmers' meetings

Required qualifications:

financial management experience or knowledge, esp in not-for-profit environment
administrative skills or experience
volunteer management, team building, or leadership skills
strong understanding of campus community radio and familiarity with CRTC regulations
fundraising, grant writing or promotions experience
computer skills: strong level of comfort in basic office software, social networking, databases; ability to adapt to Linux OS
ability to work independently
ability to prioritize tasks; to set and achieve goals

Desired qualifications:

experience working or volunteering in community radio
radio production and/or digital audio editing skills or experience
knowledge of and interest in a wide variety of cultural, musical, and political expressions
experience in or understanding of non-hierchical staff structures
advanced computer skills (design & layout)
experience in promotion or event coordination

Accountability, Hours, and Remuneration:
The Station Coordinator is a member of CKDU's non-hierarchical staff structure and is accountable to the CKDU Board of Directors.

The Station Coordinator is a one-year maternity leave replacement contract position, with 32 hours per week at $15.75 per hour. Start date is ideally October 17^th, 2011, with an end date of October 12^th, 2012. Holidays and benefits are as per CKDU's Employment Policy.

From the Archives: A CKDU News Flashback - The Maersk Dubai incident

Today from the archives we go back to 1997 and a discussion of a major local and national news event.

In 1996, the Maersk Dubai container ship arrived in Halifax, and with it came reports from Filipino crew members that officers had forced three stowaways overboard to their death while at sea. Four of the men who came forward to police went on to live in Halifax while their families back in the Philippines were harassed and threatened in an effort to prevent them from testifying against the officers. Meanwhile, the federal minister of Citizenship and Immigration at the time was being asked to step in to grant the men refugee status which had been previously denied. It was a major moment in Canadian immigration history.

The CKDU archives presents here a recording with a member of "The Concern for Seafarer Witnesses Society" - a society set up to aid the four sailors in Halifax and their families. This interview took place on CKDU on December 8th of 1997 just two days after a march through downtown Halifax to show public support.

African Nova Scotians May Become First in Canada to Join SRDC

CKDU Community Radio in Halifax hosted a round table discussion on July 19th to mark 2011 as the International Year for People of African Descent, and to alert Nova Scotians to a series of upcoming town halls. The discussion featured guest panelists Dr. Rocky Jones and Denise Allen.

The first town hall will take place in Africville Park on July 30th during the Annual Africville Reunion, from 2 pm to 6 pm. Other town halls are planned for Sydney, Cape Breton, on August 3rd at Menelic Hall, and in Lincolnville and New Glasgow area.

Dr. Rocky Jones will be a panelist at the July 30th town hall. Under the theme "Remember The Ant", The event organizers hope to engage and empower local African Nova Scotian communities, and consider joining the Sixth Region Diaspora Caucus (SRDC), a member of the African Union.

CKDU interviews Toronto-based Muskox

Once when driving the Klondike highway in the Yukon Territory, I had to stop the car because a herd of Muskox blocked the road. The animals seemed to be from another space and time: bigger than our car, slow-moving, and at least a dozen of them. We came to a complete stop and observed for a while, until they moved out of our way.

Not so different from the live animal, is the band from Toronto.

Toronto-based six piece, Muskox, will be bringing their own temporal and sonic experience to Halifax for Jazz East's yearly Spring festival. A prominent theme in the music is it's polyrhythmic and polyphonic qualities. Their sound, a mix of minimalism, jazz, prog rock, with folk and electric instruments, led by a banjoist, is sure to make listeners pause and reflect.

The CKDU News Collective had a chance to speak with Muskox composer Michael Smith on the phone about the band's sound, and the new found experience of taking their music on the road.

9th Annual Homelessness Marathon: The largest discussion on homelessness and poverty in Canada

This year's Homelessness Marathon will broadcast live from the streets of Halifax, Montreal, Vancouver, and the United States on Wednesday, February 23rd, starting at sunset (6 pm AST) and running all night long until sunrise (8 am) on Thursday, February 24th.

WHAT IS THE HOMELESSNESS MARATHON?

The Homelessness Marathon is annually broadcast by 40 campus, community and native radio stations. The 9th annual Homelessness Marathon will deliver 14 hours of people-powered radio from multiple cities across Canada. With the goal of being a consciousness-raising and empowering event, the Marathon provides an opportunity for homeless people and their allies to take to the airwaves, and allows a nationwide discussion on homelessness issues and possible solutions.

The marathon is a consciousness raising, not a fund-raising broadcast. We believe that solving the problem of homelessness requires fundamental changes in the way our nation’s priorities are structured. The whole mission of the marathon is to ignite a national dialogue about what these changes should be.

The marathon will be available via the internet on two MP3 streams from ckdu.ca/stream_links.html. Halifax listeners can tune in to 88.1 fm to listen live.

History:

The Homelessness Marathon was founded in 1998 by Jeremy Weir Alderson (aka “Nobody”) as an offshoot of his regular radio program, “The Nobody Show,” broadcast weekly on WEOS, an NPR-affiliate in Geneva, NY. “That first year, I was just thinking of it as a matter of conscience,” Alderson says. “Basically,I just wanted to get on the air and say, ‘This isn’t right, and I want no part of it,’ and, of course, I wanted to bolster this argument with the opinions of experts and the voices of homeless people.” He got the idea of broadcasting from outdoors in the dead of winter, he says, because he wanted to dramatize the plight of people with nowhere to go in the cold.

Save CKLN: CKDU supports sister campus community radio

On January 28, 2011, the CRTC revoked the broadcast license of CKLN 88.1 FM, Ryerson Campus Community Radio, which has been mandated to cease broadcasting on February 12, 2011 (see Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2011-56).

The revocation of the license was characterized as "unwarranted and inequitable" by Louise Poirier, a sitting CRTC Commissioner herself, and author of the dissenting opinion on the ruling. The CRTC had other measures available to it but elected for this extreme measure.

Tune in to CKDU's Operation Wake Up on Thursday, February 10th between 8 am and 9 am, for a special re-broadcast of CKUT's 'Solidarity Hour of Protest'. Canadians are calling on the CRTC to change their decision, and calling on their members of Parliament to intervene. CKLN is Canada's oldest campus community radio station!

CKDU CELEBRATES 26 YEARS OF COMMUNITY BROADCASTING

Radio stations grow up so fast! Don't you think?

On February 1, CKDU 88.1FM turns 26 years old! That's right, 26 years of community broadcasting!

From February 1st through February 7th, CKDU programs will be airing archival clips and include visits from former radio hosts. It is a 7-day on-air party that will feature specialty programming recollecting 26 years of FM broadcasting.

Celebrations will start on February 1st at 4pm. CKDU will air “Novelty” by Joy Divison, the first song ever broadcast on CKDU FM. The truth: it was supposed to be the more appropriate “Transmission” which was on the flip-side, but hey, here at CKDU, we embrace mistakes!

But the party doesn't end on Tuesday. All week CKDU will feature specialty programming recollecting its 26 years of FM broadcasting. Some particulars to look forward to:

THE SPOKEN WORD ARCHIVE with the hosts of Operation Wake Up! CKDU recently received a grant to digitize its huge archive of spoken material dating from 1986 - 1997. Each weekday morning, starting Tues. Feb. 1, the hosts will go into the vaults and play some fine content from our fair city.

ELEGANT VOLTAGE with Nick Barrington. The golden voice and eclectic musical taste behind Elegant Voltage will be featuring highlights from 24 years of broadcasting on Tues. Feb. 1, 9am to 10:30am. Listen for archived interviews and a special Halifamous guest or two may stop by!

RADIO NUMERICA, the CKDU countdown show, will look back into the archives and play hits from CKDU's long history of top 30 charts. Tune in on Tues. Feb. 1, 2:30pm – 4pm.

HALIFAX IS BURNING connects local musicians to CKDU! Host Trevor Murphy will connect the dots! So many local bands, so many connections to your radio station. Lock in, Tues. Feb. 1, 6:30pm - 7:30pm.

BACK IN THE CUT with DJ Bumpsie funks it up with a retro retrospective! Funk boogie barrage! Hear it y'all, Tues. Feb. 1, 9pm - 10:30pm.

THIRD WAVE RADIO with Gianna Lauren will talk to artists who share a love for CKDU. Catch it Thurs. Feb. 3, 2pm - 3:30pm.

IRISH EDDIE AND THE HIGHLAND GAC with Glen Coolen. Hear clips from the long history of this flagship CKDU show dating back to 1988! Tune in on Thurs. Feb. 3, 6pm to 7pm.

SATURDAY MORNING MUSICAL BOX with Walter Kemp. Walter is the only current CKDU programmer who was with us when we started on FM, 26 years ago. Tune in on Sat. Feb. 5, 8am - 10am, for a special 25th anniversary show featuring interviews from the past two decades, as well as live drop-in guests.

TOUCHSTONE with Bev Lab looks back on his 25 years of broadcasting with CKDU! Folk music for everyone on Sat. Feb. 5, 10am - 12pm.

INNER CONNECTIONS with Terry Choyce. A spiritual look back at CKDU's history with past interviews including one with Sakyong Mipha, the head of the Shambhala Buddhist lineage and Shambhala International.

THE SWING ARRANGEMENT with Charles Hsuen. Another great longstanding show at CKDU takes a trip to the past. Check it on Mon. Feb. 7, 7pm - 8pm.

Birthing an Ancient Practice: A Place for Midwifery in Nova Scotia showcases voices of women and men who have encountered the occupation of midwifery in various degrees.

The piece opens with a historical evaluation of midwifery’s integration into the provincial health system and how regulation influenced the practice. The narrative explores the practice of midwifery and the specific model of care and approach to labour and birth shaped by working midwives in the province. We hear from individuals involved in the process behind introducing midwifery as a
regulated health profession, and on the other end of the spectrum, voices from consumers of midwifery that present a wide range of feedback on the current format of care in Nova Scotia.

Midwifery is a customary practice that pre-dates hospitals and medical schools and health administrations, yet each Canadian province measures midwifery care in various scales of value and some provincial health departments fail to recognize it at all. Nova Scotia has achieved regulation but the model is still growing to establish a format that works for both consumers and the health department. Women’s access to choice is at the forefront of this audio piece, this snapshot of time, capturing the experiences of midwifery in Nova Scotia and objectives for
the future of the practice.

Bev Lamb began hosting Touchstone back in July of 1985. Featuring folk music and interviews, Touchstone has remained constant throughout the years due to its stimulating and steadfast host, Bev Lamb.

This past Saturday July 17 we had a surprise party in the CKDU studios to celebrate Bev's 25 years of outstanding radio programming. There was cake and performances by Bill Plaskett, Dave Stone, Clary Croft, Sandy Greenberg, and Thomas Cormier to help recognize Bev's amazing accomplishment. Thanks to everyone who came out, and hats off to Bev Lamb for giving us something to celebrate!

Youth Now Gets Honorable Mention at Community Radio Awards

Every Monday from 5:30pm-7pm CKDU 88.1FM presents Youth Now, a program which provides an open panel for youth at risk. This live panel discussion aims to help foster growth and understanding in the community while not forgetting the importance of music throughout the show's duration. Some of the topics that are covered include the criminalization of black youth, public transportation issues in the HRM, the politics of music, violence against women, and a focus on stigmatized communities.

Recently at the 2010 Community Radio Awards, Youth Now was given an honourable mention for an Outstanding Achievement in Current Affairs for a segment called "The N Word". Youth Now is produced by the Youth Now Collective whose members include Sobaz Benjamin, Glynn Johnson, Marshall Williams, Chris Toulany, Rebecca Moore, KC Brooks, Lameia Reddick, Oren Williams, and Kyle Crawley.

Iara lee: Smuggled footage exposes Gaza Flotilla attack

Israel's deadly raid on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla killed 9 passengers and left many more wounded in the early hours of May 31st. Over 700 activists aboard the flotilla were held captive for three days following the attack. Israel released a trickle of video footage and photos during that time. Some recordings were later revealed to be misleadingly edited, to prove an allegedly violent ship attacked the Israeli army.

Most of the footage aboard the ship was confiscated by the Israeli Defense Forces. However, one filmmaker managed to smuggle out three tiny SD cards that carried one hour of footage from the Mavi Marmara boat.

Iara Lee, New York based Korean-Brazilian filmmaker, was aboard the ship with her film crew. Since being released and deported from Israel, she has testified in front of the United Nations. Her footage was shared on the internet, and received one million hits over the weekend following the attack. It has helped establish the facts of what happened during the attack, including over 30 shots fired by the Israeli army, some at almost point blank range.

On June 22, CKDU 88.1FM had the chance to catch up with Iara Lee over skype, to discuss her experience of the attack, the purpose of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, and what the next steps are for the international, Palestinian-led movement to end the Gaza Blockade.

CKDU IS HIRING A FUNDING DRIVE COORDINATOR

Nature of the job:
The Funding Drive Coordinator is responsible for coordinating CKDU FM's annual on-air Funding Drive, in cooperation with the rest of the CKDU staff collective & membership. The goal for the Funding Drive is to raise $25,000 to help run CKDU for the next year. The Funding Drive is an annual event centered around an on-air pledge drive taking place from October 1st to 7th, with a possible extension to October 14th.

Duties & responsibilities:
● Facilitate bi-weekly meetings with the Funding Drive Committee
● Maintain regular office hours on CKDU-FM's premises
● Maintain healthy relationship with the volunteers, take part in decision-making in programmers' meetings and programmer-driven committee meetings
● Coordinate, train, and schedule volunteers during Funding Drive (phone operators, data entry, cheerleaders, event tablers, etc.)
● Coordinate creation and distribution of volunteer guide and other required materials
● Solicit funding drive prizes and coordinate the Prize Room
● Coordinate key funding drive events with volunteers and staff
● Encourage and provide support to programmers planning funding drive events
● Coordinate, with Production Committee, production of on-air advertisements associated with Funding Drive
● Coordinate general promotion for Funding Drive, including media releases and advertisements
● Coordinate record keeping (contra deals, sponsorship contracts, sales invoices) and pledge payment system in conjunction with station coordinator
● Coordinate data entry during and following Funding Drive – logging pledges and payments in database
● Coordinate unpaid pledge mail-out following Funding Drive

Desired experience and/or skills:
• volunteer management and coordination
fundraising
• management/coordination of events, small or large
• computer skills: basic office, basic layout & design, social networking, information systems or databases
• experience in community radio
• knowledge of CKDU's mandate
• experience with community organizations and/or not-for-profit organizations
• experience in or understanding of non-hierchical staff structures

The contract position is for 320 hours, to be completed over 12 weeks, starting August 9th and
finishing on October 29th, 2010. Compensation is in the amount of $15 per hour. Hours may be worked on a flexible basis from week to week, considering the nature of the position.

Third Wave Radio Is Back!

Gianna Lauren is back on the airwaves with Third Wave Radio starting this Thursday July 15 on CKDU 88.1FM.

Gianna had been traveling across Canada by VIA Rail from Vancouver to Halifax with touring bandmate, Field Assembly. The two artists hopped on and off to perform their collaborative sound at galleries, living rooms, music stores, and various other locations including the train itself!

Sounds like fun, but we are glad Third Wave Radio and Gianna will be returning this Thursday! Third Wave Radio is a show that is produced in the CKDU studio and then circulated throughout campus and community radio stations all over! You will hear female focused news and music aimed at generating awareness of feminist discourse, and content that challenges traditional norms that shape the view of women today.

The Jazz Festival has kicked into full gear!
CKDU has been having a blast experiencing all the diverse talent the festival has to offer. De La Soul was an energetic hip hop show despite the absence of Two Plug, Ali Shaheed Muhammad made us all feel beautiful with his melodic tracks and soulful beats, the Dan Weiss Trio provided an intimate jam session with wild drumming and coexistent chanting, and NOMO was a dance party that brought us back to our roots in a free for all of passion.

And that's only the beginning! Listen to the Dark End of the Street tonight, Monday July 12, from 9:00-10:30pm to hear Lamont McLachlan interview world renowned jazz artist, Peter Van Huffel. CKDU welcomes back the Halifax Jazz Festival! 9 days of amazing music begins today with an abundance of talented performers from around the globe. With so many diverse backgrounds, and a strong expression of eclectic talent, it will be difficult not to submerge yourself in this year's unique festival.

Join CKDU 88.1 in keeping up to date with the festivities as we give you weather reports from the Festival Tent on Operation Wake Up (Monday to Friday 8-9am), interview Jazz Fest performers throughout the week, and dance like crazy at the Seahorse on Saturday July 10 for NOMO. Jazz Fest is upon us once again. With so many great acts starting on Friday July 9, CKDU will be heavily involved with giving you up to date weather reports from the festival tent, interviews with the performers, and giving you.. FREE STUFF!

CKDU Gets On The Water

CKDU 88.1 will be spending tomorrow, Sunday July 4th, learning how to canoe and kayak on the beautiful Lake Banook for the 4th annual MEC PADDLEFEST!
Come out for a free day on the water, take part in one of the many water courses, and learn from different paddle enthusiasts about canoeing fundamentals, and anything from self rescues and stretching, to trip cooking and navigation.

We're not going to be teaching any clinics, but we will be supplying the tunes.

FUNDING DRIVE COORDINATOR

Nature of the job:
The Funding Drive Coordinator is responsible for coordinating CKDU FM's annual on-air Funding Drive, in cooperation with the rest of the CKDU staff collective & membership. The goal for the Funding Drive is to raise $25,000 to help run CKDU for the next year. The Funding Drive is an annual event centered around an on-air pledge drive taking place from October 1^st to 7^th, with a possible extension to October 14^th.

Duties & responsibilities:

The duties of Funding Drive Coordinator are as follows:

Facilitate bi-weekly meetings with the Funding Drive Committee.
Maintain healthy relationship with the volunteers, take part in decision-making in programmers' meetings and programmer-driven committee meetings
Coordinate, train, and schedule volunteers during Funding Drive
Coordinate creation and distribution of volunteer guide and other required materials
Solicit funding drive prizes and coordinate the Prize Room
Coordinate key funding drive events with volunteers and staff
Coordinate, with Production Committee, production of on-air advertisements associated with Funding Drive
Coordinate general promotion for Funding Drive, including media releases and advertisements

Desired experience and/or skills:

volunteer management and coordination
fundraising
management/coordination of events, small or large
computer skills: basic office, basic layout & design, social networking, information systems or databases
experience in community radio
ability to work independently
ability to prioritize, set, and achieve goals
knowledge of CKDU's mandate
experience with community organizations and/or not-for-profit organizations

Accountability, Hours, and Remuneration:
The contract position is for 320 hours, to be completed over 12 weeks, starting August 9^th and finishing on October 29^th, 2010.

Compensation is in the amount of $15 per hour. Hours may be worked on a flexible basis from week to week, considering the nature of the position.

Wondering how to spend your summer?
CKDU 88.1 is looking for youth in the HRM to participate in a summer workshop in radio and music production.

By participating in this course you can:
- Become a member of CKDU and create your own live broadcast
- Learn the basics of do-it-yourself recording
- Meet with local artists and professionals and learn about the independent media industry in your community
- Work with professional equipment and visit local studios
- Produce a documentary on the topic of your choice to go on the air and web!

Sunshine, music, and radio- what a better way to enjoy the summertime!

This course is directed to those largely in high school.

CKDU Presents: G20 in Toronto

The Group of 8 Leaders and the Group of 20 Leaders are meeting in Ontario, from the 25th to the 27th of June, 2010. Organizations of women, people of colour, indigenous peoples, the poor, the working class, queer and trans people and disabled people are organizing a people's convergence, and calling for a disruption of the summit.

The CKDU News Collective will be reporting from the Alternative Media Centre in Toronto to bring listeners coverage of the G8/G20 summit protests in the streets.

Programmers from CKDU, CKLN, CKUT and other stations will be collaborating to produce daily 10 minute podcasts from June 21 to June 25 to air on campus/community radio stations across the country.

CKDU Presents the New Roots Radio Project.

This fall, CKDU 88.1 FM will tell the compelling tales of immigrants, refugees, migrant workers, and newcomers to Nova Scotia. You will hear their success and hardships, discover different cultures, and begin to grasp the injustices they face everyday.

But, we need some help!

- Are you between the ages of 16 to 30?
- Do you have 2 to 4 hours to spare every week from July until December?
- Have a passion for issues on multiculturalism and immigration?
- Want to experience the world of radio and journalism?
If Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, then CKDU WANTS YOU!

Receive training from an award winning journalist, a radio documentary featuring your name and voice, and the chance to make a difference! Oh, and you'll receive a chunk of change!

Interested? Send an email subjected "intern" to newrootsradio@gmail.com with a short essay about yourself. Describe any past experience with issues in immigration, what you will be doing this year (work,school etc), and what your schedule is like!

Dave Bidini makes a stop at CKDU.. tomorrow morning @ 9!

Dave Bidini, author, film maker, playwright, and member of the former Rheostatics, is stopping by CKDU tomorrow morning at 9:00. If you call yourself Canadian, you remember the Rheostatics who portrayed all that was Canadian in a rock band that went places off the beaten track. After almost thirty years with the Rheostatics, Bidni has since formed the Bidiniband whose debut album, "The Land is Wild", has given us tracks about "dead hockey players, cannibalism, and lesbian school teachers."

The Bidiniband is in town tonight and tomorrow (June 15, 16) and will be playing two shows at The Carleton scheduled for 9pm with Colleen and Paul Linklater. Dave Bidini will also be at the Halifax Club, Wednesday at 12:00pm, as his next book, "Home and Away: The Story of the 2008 Homeless World Cup", is scheduled to release this fall. Tune in to CKDU 88.1FM tomorrow morning at 9:00 to hear an exclusive interview with Bidini. The location of a secret show will be announced, so make sure to listen to get the details of a very special performance.

Thank you to everybody that made the first Eclectic Avenue such a great success!! We danced all night last Wednesday at the Seahorse to raise some funds for the wonderful CKDU. We got funked out, punked out, and zapped back to the classic time of Duck Hunt. (No ducks were harmed)

Jenocide's ability to take a sweet Chromeo track and turn it into her aggressive electro style, combined with Duzheknew's amazing bass and unique sound, made it a night to truly celebrate! Not to mention featured CKDU programmers, DJ Anderoc, and DJ Mega Brain who kept us all moving with their groovy beats. To keep the party going check out Mad Session Fridays at 8pm and Groove Maneuvers Sundays at 7:30pm on CKDU 88.1FM!
