1 in 5 Canadians will suffer a mental health crisis in their lifetime, yet talking about mental health is still quite a taboo. The Youth Speak program promotes frank discussion and breaks down stigma and negative stereotypes about mental illness. Laing House is a community support centre for youth aged 17-24 living with a serious mental illness. Laing House members helped create Youth Speak as a vehicle to engage high school youth in a participatory, interactive dialogue about mental health, mental illness and coping with stress. Youth Speak is a presentation by youth who are members of Laing House.
The Laing House members will be at CKDU on April 16 at 11am until 12pm, live on the air to present information on mental illness, stress, stigma, coping, and lifestyle. While most people can tell you about their physical health, little attention is given to mental health. The presentation not only educates people about warning signs of different mental illnesses but also allows people to become more aware of their own mental health.
The most powerful part of the presentation is that the young presenters talking about mental illness are also living with an illness - Laing House youth will take time near the end of the presentation to share their personal stories and struggles with mental illness.
After the presentation they will also be taking questions from callers. Phone the CKDU request line at 494-2487 to speak with Laing House youth.
