CKDU-FM is the non-profit campus-based community radio station at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. CKDU is mandated to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters, providing a forum for diverse and under-represented voices, music and news. The station broadcasts within the HRM 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by more than 200 volunteers.
Nature of the Job:
The Music Director is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the music library and music databases, as well as working with the Program Director to ensure that music programming fulfills CKDU's mandate. The Music Director's duties include, but are not limited to, encouraging volunteer initiatives to connect music programming to the broader community, holding a weekly Music Library training session, compiling and reporting the weekly charts, facilitating the production of Radio Numerica (the two-hour weekly chart countdown show), and processing new releases, considering genre representation and musical diversity, quality and space. The Music Director is part of the CKDU staff collective, which meets weekly and makes decisions through consensus.
This is a part-time 20 hour per week position at a rate of $15.75 per hour. Start date is July 28, 2008.
Applicable Skills:
Past experience with community organizations and a demonstrated ability to work with volunteers are essential. The Music Director must be supportive of a wide variety of cultural and musical expressions. Effective administration and library maintenance skills are essential. The Music Director should have a strong level of comfort working with computers and databases. They should also be proficient with software that includes (but is not limited to) email clients, web browsers, file transfer applications, and word processing. Practical experience in music programming and radio production are assets. Familiarity with digital audio and the Linux OS are beneficial.
