GROUNDWIRE IS HIRING A PART-TIME NATIONAL COORDINATOR!

The National Campus and Community Radio Association (NCRA/ANREC) is a non-profit national association of organizations and individuals committed to volunteer-based, community-oriented radio broadcasting.

GroundWire is the NCRA’s collaboratively-produced national news magazine. A 29-minute news radio program , GroundWire features headlines, reports and features from the community radio sector in Canada. The program aims
to be a strong, reliable, high-quality newscast, engaging the audience with geographically and culturally diverse features that address issues of interest to specific communities as well as to a national audience.

The NCRA requires a GroundWire Coordinator, who will be responsible for several aspects of GroundWire, the NCRA’s national collaborative news program, as it grows and develops during the next two years. Areas of
responsibility include Editorial and Production work on the program, distribution and promotion of GroundWire, outreach, and fundraising.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Editorial & Production
- Recruitment of stations to produce the program on a regular basis and develop a production schedule, with attention to representing Canada’s regional diversity
- Recruitment and training of reporters and journalists from across Canada, with attention to cultural diversity
- Development of an editorial committee, including producers, reporters and dedicated listeners, for biweekly evaluation of programming and ongoing review and development of production and editorial standards
- Editorial support to producing stations

Distribution & Promotion
- Promotion of the program to community radio stations in Canada, ongoing communication with stations about the program and whether it meets their needs
- Co-ordination of production of promotional carts
- Development of a button or banner for NCRA stations and others to include on their websites
- Online and print promotion of the program to individual listeners
- Ongoing evaluation and interpretation of download and streaming statistics from the NCRA website
- Contra advertising in print publications (eg. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Monitor, the Dominion, Canadian Dimension, etc.)
- Developing partnerships with unions, non-governmental organizations, community organizations, for cross-promotion among our respective memberships
- Representing GroundWire at community events, facilitating the participation of GroundWire reporters and producers at community events in their areas

Fundraising
- Identification of fundraising opportunities – eg. Community Radio Fund of Canada, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, with a target of $11,000 per year
- Preparation of reports for funders
- Research into membership-based or listener-based fundraising models, to be presented to the NCRA staff and board

ACCOUNTABILITY STRUCTURE

Teamwork: While the National Coordinator facilitates production and dissemination of GW, The NCRA provides administration of the project budget. Therefore, the GW Coordinator works together with the NCRA Executive Director regularly to keep the project on track. The GW Coordinator also works with the NCRA Groundwire steering committee to ensure that Groundwire serves the values and objectives of the NCRA and its members.

Reporting: The National Co-ordinator reports monthly to the NCRA Groundwire steering committee on the production, content, promotion and dissemination of Groundwire, and on fundraising and planning for the project. The National Coordinator also reports to funders on GW's accomplishments, as measured against objectives.

RELEVANT SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
- Two to five years' experience in news gathering and/or production, including editorial roles. Relevant formal training would be an additional asset.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English language required, proficiency in French an asset.
- Demonstrated organizational ability, experience coordinating collaborative tasks.
- Network, national in scope, of independent media organizations, reporters, producers, and other stakeholders.
- Experience training and coordinating volunteers in radio news.
- Knowledge of practical and other issues relating to campus and community radio and affecting local independent news gathering and production.

Terms: $240/week (16 hours per week, at $15/hour)

Project to begin June 8, 2009 or ASAP.
