FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Halifax, NS – November 4, 2014 - Halifax's beloved campus-community radio station CKDU 88.1 FM will kick off its 30th annual Funding Drive on November 17. The fundraising campaign is a week of events, prizes and special programming celebrating the diversity and community-wide impact of the station's programming and services. CKDU is Halifax's only campus and community radio station offering free orientations to broadcasting and providing media skills to over 600 community members annually. In addition, since 1984 CKDU has been providing on-site recording and broadcasting opportunities, production and promotions for non-profit groups and student societies, and highlighting under-represented music and alternative perspectives to the HRM and beyond. “Unlike the majority of media, community radio is not driven by ratings or the advertising dollar,” says Russell Gragg, Chair of the CKDU Board of Directors. “It exists to showcase the voices of a diverse community.”

Halifax's “alternative to the mainstream” is aiming to raise $25,000 to put toward equipment upgrades and special projects including transferring decades of spoken word content from tape to digital. The money raised will go a long way in maintaining CKDU's status as an independent media source and accessible location for skill development. “CKDU occupies a unique role in Halifax's media landscape. Funding Drive is the opportunity for the local community to show that they value independent media and culture,” continues Gragg. The Funding Drive acts as critical contribution to offset operational funding of which only 80% is covered by student levies from full-time students of Dalhousie University and the University of King's College. “CKDU creates avenues for under-represented voices by strengthening communities that don't otherwise have space on the airwaves,” says CKDU Station Coordinator Gianna Lalonde. “We have over 100 broadcasters speaking in 10 different languages and ranging from 15 years of age to 75 years of age. CKDU is a hub for creativity, skill-building, and excelling in programming you can't hear anywhere else in Halifax.” To mark almost 30 years on the air CKDU is hosting the legendary on-air pledge-a-thon starting Monday November 17 at 9am and closing at midnight on Sunday November 23. Tune in all week long to support your favourite program and take home a variety of exciting prizes. Each CKDU Broadcaster will be raising money toward their radio show and will be bringing prizes, special programming, and incentives to encourage donations. A full list of prizes, generously donated by many local businesses, and the fresh swag for 2014 can be viewed at fundingdrive.ckdu.ca.

In addition to the classic on-air pledge-a-thon, CKDU volunteers and staff are hosting over a dozen events throughout the month of November to celebrate community radio. Events include concerts and gatherings featuring local talent in music and spoken word. The full list of events and further information on the Funding Drive, including how to pledge, can be found at fundingdrive.ckdu.ca.
