CKDU is Hiring an Information Systems Technician!




CKDU is hiring an
INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN

CKDU-FM is a non-profit campus and community radio station based at Dalhousie University serving listeners throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and under-represented voices and artists. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 150 volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and 4 permanent part-time staff.

Job Summary:
The Information Systems Technician is responsible for CKDU's information technology and website. CKDU's information technology currently includes a network of 3 studio computers (digital audio workstations) and 5 office computers, all of which run on Fedora Linux; 2 printers; and 1 computer running FreeBSD that archives and streams CKDU's broadcast. CKDU's new website is currently under development to include a variety of new and upgraded features, including audio streaming, podcasting and archiving, as well as various web-based forms and databases for staff and programmers. The Information Systems Technician works closely with CKDU's part-time Broadcast Technician, the CKDU staff collective, and reports to the CKDU Board of Directors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Information Systems Technician's duties and responsibilities include development, maintenance and administration for the following:
  • Studio computers (digital audio workstations);
  • Office computers;
  • Servers;
  • Network;
  • Printers;
  • Data backup;
  • Remote access to computers;
  • Online archive of radio broadcast;
  • Online stream of radio broadcast;
  • Website;
  • Web-based forms and databases;
  • Email.
In addition, the Information Systems Technician's duties and responsibilities include being on-call and being available to work on short notice in the event of equipment failure that causes interruption to CKDU's broadcast.

Qualifications:
The Information Systems Technician must have a strong knowledge base and skill set in information technology and web development, specifically:
  • Computer hardware and software installation, service, maintenance and repair;
  • Server and network installation, service, maintenance and repair;
  • Linux and Unix-like operating systems, including Fedora and FreeBSD;
  • Free and open source software;
  • Command line interfaces and shell scripts
;
  • Automation and backup, including RAID, cron, rsync and rdiff;
  • Computer hardware and software sourcing and purchasing;
  • Remote access, including SSH and FTP;
  • Digital archiving of radio broadcast;
  • Online streaming of radio broadcast;
  • Website development and maintenance.

Knowledge of CKDU and its mandate or experience with campus/community radio is an asset.

The Information Systems Technician may be required to work alongside CKDU's Broadcast Technician during technical emergencies, and accordingly must have a basic understanding in:
  • Radio broadcasting;
  • Studio recording;
  • Audio;
  • Electronics.

The Information Systems Technician will be responsible for technical support and training, and must accordingly have the ability to:

  • Interact with a variety of people with varying levels of skills;
  • Accommodate various learning needs and abilities;
  • Effectively communicate technical material, orally and written.

Accountability:

The Information Systems Technician is accountable to the CKDU Board of Directors.



Hours and Compensation:

Hours: 10 hours per week, schedule is flexible.
Pay: $17/hr
Start Date: June 2015, negotiable.
