CKDU-FM is a
non-profit campus and community radio station based at Dalhousie University
serving listeners throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our mandate is
to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a
forum for diverse and under-represented voices and artists. The station
broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 150
volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and 4 permanent part-time staff

FM is launching a community engagement initiative which
involves attracting and encouraging committed, diverse and lasting
volunteerism. Volunteering with CKDU offers a unique opportunity to use your
special skills and creativity to engage and facilitate programming
participation from diverse communities both on and off the Dalhousie University
campus.
Nature of the volunteer opportunity
Through targeted journalism, the volunteer journalist will be
responsible for helping to build CKDU's listenership and member participation
in student communities and diverse or marginalized communities throughout
Halifax. The position offers a $500.00
stipend at the end of the contract.
TITLE: CKDU Volunteer Journalist

POSITION SUMMARY:
The CKDU Volunteer journalist is a volunteer
position responsible for writing and preparing news, press releases,
info-graphics and interview questions to be broadcast on radio as well as for
print. This position will report directly to the Diversity & Outreach
Programming Coordinator.
NATURE OF THE OPPORTUNITY:
- Write, proofread and
edit news, interviews and press releases for CKDU programming and events;
- Creative writing
surrounding marginalized community issues for print and radio broadcasting;
- Conduct and develop
written interviews with community leaders, members and government
representatives;
- Ensure community
members have consented to the use of quotes and their names in interviews;
- Represent CKDU in the
community in a professional manner.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A strong understanding of federal & provincial issues affecting
marginalized communities in Nova Scotia;
- Education or experience
in journalism;
- Experience developing
and conducting interviews;
- Organized and flexible;
- Polite and professional
when dealing with the public.
TRAINING:
- Full CKDU membership is
not necessary but is highly encouraged.

NS B3H 4J2
- Other locations around
the campus and particularly within marginalized communities throughout
Halifax by event.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- Approximately 10 hours
per month but will vary depending on the number of events that CKDU is
partnering in;
- Must have flexible
availability;
- Monthly 1-hour
check-ins with the Diversity & Outreach Programming Coordinator
