CKDU is Hiring a Station Coordinator

CKDU-FM is a non-profit campus and community radio station based at Dalhousie University serving listeners throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and under-represented voices and artists. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 150 volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and 5 permanent part-time staff.

Nature of the job:
The Station Coordinator is responsible for the financial and administrative operations of the station. This includes developing and administering budgets, overseeing and monitoring fundraising, communicating with the CKDU Board of Directors, the Dalhousie Student Union and external organizations like the CRTC, all the while working within the cooperative, non-hierarchical staff structure, as a part of station committees, and with volunteers on station projects.

Duties & responsibilities:


  • Attend weekly staff meetings, take part in consensus decision-making and participate in a cooperative staff structure

  • With other staff members, assist in aspects of Funding Drive as required

  • Maintain healthy relationship with the volunteers, take part in decision-making in programmers' meetings and programmer-driven committee meetings

  • Hold a weekly Station Orientation training session

  • Act as primary liaison to the Dalhousie Student Union, governmental agencies and the community

  • Act as liaison and administrator for all contract employees

  • Make sure CKDU meets DSU standards for Societies

  • Work with Finance Committee and develop, implement and monitor operating and capital budgets

  • Undertake long-term fiscal planning and maintain financial contracts and documents

  • Work closely with the Bookkeeper, Dalhousie Student Union Accounting Department, CKDU FM’s bank and accountant on bill payments, cheque requisitions, deposits and all other financial matters

  • Coordinate relevant employment paperwork for all new and current employees, both permanent and temporary

  • Participate in Finance Committee and other meetings as required

  • In consultation with the Programming Committee, Program Director and Spoken Word Coordinator, respond to public comments and complaints about programming

  • In conjunction with the Programming Committee, Program Director and Spoken Word Coordinator, enforce CKDU rules and, if necessary, discipline errant programmers

  • Maintain documents required by regulatory and monitoring bodies including SOCAN, the CRTC, Joint Stocks, Industry Canada and other government departments

  • Coordinate Annual General Meeting in accordance with requirements of Joint Stocks

  • Solicit and monitor grant applications

  • Maintain station resources and supplies

  • Sit on the Board of Directors as a non-voting member

  • Sit as staff rep on Employment, Finance and Fundraising committees

  • Keep information, like director lists, policy changes, and constitutional changes, current with Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks, SOCAN and the CRTC

  • Maintain CKDU’s volunteer database, which includes (but is not limited to) collecting membership fees, updating the membership list, tracking volunteer and training hours for individual programmers, and keeping an updated membership list

  • Liaise with national advertising sales (Target) and oversee local advertising sales and billing

  • Organize regular Programmers' meetings


Required qualifications:

  • financial management experience or knowledge, esp in not-for-profit environment

  • administrative skills or experience

  • volunteer management, team building, or leadership skills

  • strong understanding of campus community radio and familiarity with CRTC regulations

  • fundraising, grant writing or promotions experience

  • computer skills: strong level of comfort in basic office software, social networking, databases; ability to adapt to Linux OS

  • ability to work independently

  • ability to prioritize tasks; to set and achieve goals


Desired qualifications:

  • experience working or volunteering in community radio

  • radio production and/or digital audio editing skills or experience

  • knowledge of and interest in a wide variety of cultural, musical, and political expressions

  • experience in or understanding of non-hierchical staff structures

  • advanced computer skills (design & layout)

  • experience in promotion or event coordination


Accountability, Hours, and Remuneration:
The Station Coordinator is a member of CKDU's non-hierarchical staff structure and is accountable to the CKDU Board of Directors.


The Station Coordinator is a one-year maternity leave replacement contract position, with 32 hours per week at $15.75 per hour. Start date is ideally October 17th, 2011, with an end date of October 12th, 2012. Holidays and benefits are as per CKDU's Employment Policy.
