CKDU Co-Presents: Out Like a Lion Festival

March 21, 2013 (Halifax, NS) - Halifax is hopeful March will go out like a lamb, but JazzEast promises it will leave with a roar when Out Like a Lion kicks off next week. During its fourth annual winter music festival JazzEast showcases some exciting new projects including student bands and new collaborations by local artists.

"Out Like a Lion highlights many different forms of jazz while showcasing local musicians in our community," states Laura 'Lulu' Healy, JazzEast Artistic Director "This year's line-up will take audiences from the 20s jazz-age through the 50s and 60s to the innovative sounds being created on the jazz scene today."

Out Like a Lion starts 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, with Young Lions at the Company House. The line-up, co-presented by CKDU,  features student bands including the St. FX Guitar Ensemble, the NSCC R&B Ensemble and Dalhousie Jazz Ensemble.

The Lion moves to The Peggy Corkum Music Room, 8 p.m. Thursday, March 28. The Andrew Jackson Group, lead by trombonist and composer Andrew Jackson, changes up their usual horn heavy music by including a string quartet in the mix. PANOS (Panos Giannoulis) starts the evening off with avant-garde and improvised jazz.

Agricola's newly opened Café Cempoal Calavera Negra hosts the Lion 9 p.m. Friday, March 29. Listeners will hear the experimental soundscapes of the newly formed group Mother of Girl. Drummer Doug Cameron and pianist Tim Crofts will kick off the show; although they have performed together in many contexts this is the first time they are playing as a duo, interpreting the works of the great jazz composers, Thelonious Sphere Monk (also known as 'The High Priest of Bop').

The Prohibition Swing Dance at the Olympic Community Centre concludes the festival Saturday, March 30. Starting at 8 p.m. with dance lessons by the Dalhousie Swing Society, Gypsophilia opens the night with their much loved mix of gypsy jazz with klezmer, funk, classical music, indie rock and bebop. The Jubilee Swing Orchestra will then take the stage and play into the wee hours with live music fitting for this costume party that attracts audiences of all ages.

Tickets start at $8 and festival passes are $38. For event and ticket information visit jazzeast.com.
