Archivist and Documentary Producer
CKDU-FM
is a non-profit campus and community radio station based at Dalhousie
University serving listeners throughout the Halifax Regional
Municipality. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and
public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and
under-represented voices and artists. The station broadcasts 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 150 volunteers, a
volunteer board of directors, and 4 permanent part-time staff.

Nature of the Job:
CKDU
is celebrating thirty (30) years of campus and community radio
broadcasting on February 1, 2015. The CKDU Archivist and Documentary
Producer will work to preserve, archive and celebrate
CKDU's history
of audio and visual materials. The Archivist and Documentary Producer
will work alongside Programming staff to digitize 150-200 reels that
contain spoken
word and music programming from the years 1980-2000,
while cataloguing the information in a database and creating an
accessible platform for broadcast use. Working toward the 30 year
anniversary, the Archivist and Documentary Producer will scan, date,
and catalogue photos, print
materials and awards from CKDU's 30+
years as an active community media centre in Halifax. The Archivist
and Documentary Producer will
also launch a weekly 1 hour radio
program entitled 'Vintage CKDU' wherein these historical tapes will
be shared
with listeners. The Archivist and Documentary Producer
will work with CKDU
staff and a committee of volunteers to produce a
30-60 minute audio documentary on CKDU history. Alongside staff,
Board, and volunteers, the position will assist in the coordination a
community-wide event on CKDU's 30th anniversary February 1
2015 to
unveil the audio and visual materials chronicling CKDU's history. On
this commemorative date the Archivist and Documentary Producer will
release the documentary on CKDU history. In
conjunction with the
Anniversary, the station will launch a webpage at CKDU.CA that
features the audio and
visual archives as well as the documentary.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Transfer audio content from reel-to-reel, cassette, and CD to digital files and store on server and DVD;
- Listen to audio and create data associated with content (date, programmer and program name, topic, content summary);
- Label, catalogue, and maintain organization in CKDU's physical and digital spoken word and music libraries;
- Coordinate and facilitate the weekly production of 'Vintage CKDU' with the CKDU Programming Department, a program which showcases audio material from the CKDU archives;
- Facilitate and coordinate the production of a 30-60 minute documentary celebrating 30 years of CKDU's history, mandate, and relationship with volunteers and the surrounding community (to be launched in February 2015);
- With CKDU staff, Board, and a committee of volunteers, organize CKDU's 30-year multi-media anniversary event in February 2015;
- Be available to coordinate, train, and assist CKDU volunteers in basic audio production;
- Undergo training to become a permanent member and fill-in programmer at CKDU;
- Assist with shared office duties.
Qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented;
- Experience in audio production;
- Self-motivated and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment;
- Experience in community-based organizations or community radio;
- Knowledge of CKDU, its mandate and programming;
- Flexible and able to work with others creatively.

is a short-term grant-funded contract through the Community Radio
Fund of Canada.
