CKDU-FM
is a non-profit campus and community radio station and student
society based at Dalhousie University, serving listeners throughout
the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our mandate is to provide an
alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum
for diverse and under-represented voices and artists. The station
broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 150
volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and 4 permanent part-time
staff.
Nature of the job:
Nature of the job:
The
CKDU Volunteer Coordinator works with CKDU staff to recruit, train,
and foster new station volunteers. The position must be held by a
full- or part-time student of Dalhousie University or the
University of King's College. The Volunteer Coordinator will work 10
hours per week at CKDU during the fall semester of the academic year
(September 3-December 3). This is a 13-week position with an
honorarium of $1500.
Duties
and Responsibilities:
- The Volunteer Coordinator works alongside permanent CKDU staff to recruit, train, and motivate new station volunteers to obtain programmer and membership status;
- Be available to volunteers for station training and teaching the skills necessary to broadcast, understand programming rules and regulations, operate portable audio recording equipment, learn basic audio production, etc;
- Work with CKDU staff and volunteers to conduct campus outreach such as (but not limited to) tabling on campus, doing class talks, flyering, and helping plan events;
- Co-facilitate open hours at the station in the form of 'open houses' twice per month,
- Build partnerships with groups on campus and within the larger community;
- Maintain healthy relationship with volunteers, take part in decision-making in programmers' meetings and programmer-driven committee meetings.
Required
qualifications:
- Volunteer management, team building, or leadership skills;
- Ability to work with volunteers and in a team environment;
- Ability to prioritize tasks;
- Ability to set and achieve goals.
Desired
qualifications:
- Understanding of campus/community radio and/or experience working or volunteering in community radio;
- Radio production and/or digital audio editing skills or experience;
- Knowledge of and interest in a wide variety of cultural, musical, and political expressions;
- Experience in or understanding of non-hierarchical staff structures;
- Advanced computer skills (design & layout);
- Experience in promotion or event coordination.
Hours
and Remuneration:
The Volunteer Coordinator is a 13-week contract position, with 10 hours per week at $115 honorarium per week ($1500 in total). Start date is ideally September 3 2014, with an end date of December 3 2014.
